I dreamt of snow last night.

That mightn’t seem like an aberration in itself, but in this dream, it was snowing here in Ireland. It doesn’t snow very often in Ireland, and I’ve never seen it do so in any of my many dreams that have taken place in this country.

This past week, however, saw an Arctic front move across the country (deemed “The Beast From the East” by forecasters) and collide with warmer, moist air from Storm Emma, as it came up from the Bay of Biscay. (Those same forecasters dubbed the whole event … wait for it … “Emma and the Beast.”)

Our corner of the island saw the least of the event — though we still plunged in temperatures and woke to five inches of snow on Thursday — but other parts of the country were measuring snow in meters and are still digging out.

After three or four days of the white stuff covering the fabled “forty shades of green,” I guess that snow has now met Ireland in my subconscious. There is a new point of reference for my experience with the country.

More Challenges and Changes Than I Care to Remember

Like so many experiences in my life, it brought to mind how I came to cope with the changes that multiple sclerosis (MS) has visited upon me. There have been more challenges and changes with which I’ve had to cope than I care to remember. Still, it has been the recognition and meeting head-on of these challenges that has made my life what it is for these past 17 years.

In so many ways MS doesn’t simply color my life a particular shade, but rather it’s like a pair of spectacles that change the way I look at the world around me and how I fit into that world.

It’s not unlike the times I’ve lost the ability to experience one of the elements of taste; it changes the way I experience the things I’ve known and the way I perceive new opportunities.

I don’t want it to sound like I see MS in everything around me, rather that the way my disease affects me has changed how I see that world. Multiple sclerosis doesn’t define who I am, but it has placed hurdles, barriers, and the occasional mountain in my path. It sometimes narrows my vision and sometimes it broadens it, but that vision of life is not the same as it was before my diagnosis.

MS Has Changed What I Think of as Normal and Possible

As much as MS has been that pair of spectacles, changing how I see things, it has also, like that snow, changed my point of reference.

What I think of as normal, as possible, and as worthy of the energy I’d have to expend to succeed has changed because of MS. The angle from which I see, approach, and engage in life is different now. It’s like looking at a chessboard from different angles; you see the game in a whole different way.

The important part for me is not that MS has done all of this to me, but rather what I will do with what MS has left me. Because it’s what I do with what I have that keeps me going.

Wishing you and your family the best of health.

Cheers,

Trevis
