    What is a berry?

    Most people are sure that they know what a berry is, assuming that they are any juicy fruits of garden trees and shrubs such as strawberries, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries. Oddly enough, most of the fruits listed here are scientifically not related to berries. About what fruits are real berries and will be discussed further.

    What is a berry in terms of botany

    From a botanical point of view, a berry is one type of plant fruit. Fruits are dry and juicy. They are classified according to the main parts: semen and pericarp. In dry fruits - dry pericarp (eg, beans, nuts, acorns). In juicy - juicy pericarp (it is called pulp). The seed of the juicy fruit is inside the pericarp. Seeds can be several or one - on the basis of this juicy fruits and are divided into stone-budding (those with one seed-bone) and berry-like (those with many seeds). Thus, the berry is a fruit that has:

    1. Juicy flesh.
    2. Lots of seeds.
    3. Seeds are found inside the pericarp.

    What is a real berry and a false berry

    Berry fruits in nature a lot. They are divided into several types:

    • the berry itself (these include fruits of tomato, blueberry, blueberry, cranberry, lingonberry, currant, grape, gooseberry);
    • an apple (fruit of a pear, a mountain ash, actually an apple and others);
    • pumpkin (fruits of watermelon, melon, eggplant, pumpkin, zucchini);
    • Pomeranets, or hesperides (these include fruits of citrus plants);
    • granatina (pomegranate fruit).

    All of the above plants are, from a scientific point of view, real berries. The fruits of raspberry and blackberry are not to be confused with berries - they do not have seeds, but tiny bones (drupes), fused together into one complex fruit - a multi-stem. Strawberries with strawberries are also not considered berries, although at first glance they have juicy flesh and a lot of seeds. The fact is, these seeds are located on the surface of the fruit, not inside it, and in fact these seeds are microscopic nuts. Such fruits are called false berries, because the nuts in this case are the true fruits of the plant. Rosehip is also a false berry, but its nuts are not outside, but inside the pericarp.

    What is called a berry in everyday life

    In everyday life, it is not necessary to know the subtleties of botanical classifications; therefore, it is quite acceptable to call berries any fruit with a small, pulpy fruit, such as currants, gooseberries, strawberries, strawberries, rosehips, cherries, cherries, raspberries. But the fruits of large sizes (orange, eggplant, kiwi, watermelon, etc.) in everyday life, as a rule, are not called berries.

    Now you know what a berry is, and why biologists and ordinary people understand this word differently. In addition, one should not forget that many edible berries are a natural source of vitamins, nutrients and medicinal substances.
