Here, 10 odd-but-he-says-true ways Asprey claims to have lost pounds by manipulating his body's biology for the better—and how you can, too.

1. Avoid gluten.
It causes inflammation in most people and it reduces cerebral blood flow. It may not kill you right away, but it certainly doesn't help you lose weight. (Check out these 10 gluten-free portable lunches.)

2. Never eat sugar or starch before dinner.
Sugar and starch during the day set you up for blood sugar swings and cravings. Moderate starch at dinner can improve your sleep.

3. Eat more grass-fed butter, but less dairy protein from milk and cheese.
Dairy fat helps your body build healthy hormones and cell membranes while dairy protein is a common inflammation trigger that causes muffin tops and cravings.

4. Eat foods that are high in polyphenol antioxidants.
That includes chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and brightly colored vegetables. They give you the natural antioxidants you need and feed the gut bacteria that help you stay fit.

5. Treat avocados as a food group.

Avocados are a great natural source of fat and phytonutrients, and it's beneficial to eat one or more per day. The dark part of the avocado closest to the peel has the most vitamins but make sure you discard the brown parts to avoid toxins. (Check out these 8 unique ideas for avocados.)

6. When your friends order the egg white omelet, ask to have their yolks.
Yolks help you to build a healthy lining for your nerves, called myelin. They also create healthy hormones, and raise your HDL—the healthy cholesterol.

7. Drink Bulletproof Coffee for breakfast every day(made with mold-free coffee beans, unsalted grass-fed butter, and Brain Octane oil).
If you have a lot of weight to lose or are particularly stressed, add collagen protein from grass-fed cows (you can find this at the health food store) for a protein boost without the inflammation from other proteins. Get the Bulletproof Coffee recipe here.

8. Never cook with olive oil or canola oil.
Instead, cook everything in grass-fed butter or coconut oil because these oils hold up much better under heat.

9. Know that eating raw kale does not make you a better person.
Cooking kale and draining the water will remove harmful oxalic acid that can contribute to kidney stones.

10. Go moderate-protein, not-high protein.
But the protein had better be very high quality: avoid industrially raised meat sources. By eating grass-fed beef and lamb or wild-caught fish instead of factory meat, you'll get way more of the right kinds of healthy fat, including CLA, in your body.
